Why Maplewood / South Orange families drive to AllStar

15 Minutes — Worth The Drive

Maplewood has Bodega Jiu-Jitsu — a beginner-friendly No-Gi school right in the village. Good option if No-Gi only and local is your priority. AllStar is fifteen minutes down Springfield Ave and offers Gi + No-Gi BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA under a Renzo Gracie black belt with an ADCC and pro MMA record. SOMA parents who do the homework — who look at lineage, full program, and long-term development — consistently land here.

If you commute through Newark Penn or the Morris & Essex line, the 6, 7, or 8 PM slot works. Maplewood Village is fifteen minutes from the mat. Two weeks free — see whether the full program is worth the drive.

The coach

Why Lineage Actually Matters

I'm Jamal Patterson. I trained directly under Renzo Gracie at his academy in New York. I'm an ADCC veteran and pro MMA fighter — fought in the IFL and Bellator, won the UWC light heavyweight title on a first-round guillotine. I graduated from Colgate. I've been coaching at AllStar in Union since 2011.

Got questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the gym from Maplewood? +
About 15 minutes via Springfield Avenue. Free parking on-site at 1166 West Chestnut St.
What's included in the free trial? +
Two weeks of unlimited classes — adults can try BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA. Kids can try Cubs (4–6) or Lions (7–13). Use of a gi and gear during the trial. Pre-class consultation with Coach Jamal or a senior instructor. No card required to start.
What if my kid has never trained? +
Most kids walk in untrained. We have a structured beginner curriculum. The first few classes are about getting comfortable. By month two, your kid is part of the room.
Will I be the only beginner? +
No. There are always new students starting. We pair beginners with experienced training partners who guide rather than test. The room is calibrated for it.
I'm in my 40s/50s — too late? +
We have students in their 50s and 60s. BJJ rewards technique over strength, so age is less of a factor than people assume. You set the pace.
Do you have evening classes? +
Yes. Adult classes at 6 PM, 7 PM, and 8 PM most weekdays, plus Saturday morning. Built around working schedules and NYC commutes.
How do I sign up? +
Fill out the form on this page or call (908) 341-1131. We'll text you to confirm a class time.
